There’s a difference between prognostication and fortune-telling. You can use computer models and science to predict the weather; but Mother Nature will still mess with your plans. There’s a difference between using past results to handicap your horse racing bets, only to discover that the $100 you put on Horse #6 had him finishing eighth in a seven-horse field.
With that being said, here are some familiar and maybe not-so-familiar tracks that involve the mystic art of fortune telling and future clairvoyance. Gather around the tent and gaze into this mystical glass sphere. Let me get the cards with the weird pictures on them. And give me your palm, so that I can read the lines on your skin.
THE ROLLING STONES
Fortune Teller
BOBBY CURTOLA
Fortune Teller
These are two different songs. The Rolling Stones’ track is a kick-ass rocker, while Bobby Curtola was a Canadian crooner and a bit of a “teen idol” in the Great White North.
CHER
Dark Lady
Yeah, we can easily agree that the use of Romani “Gypsy” imagery in pop songs was just as offensive as it was when the tracks had Native American subjects, can’t we? But yeah … we’ve got tarot cards and other clairvoyant tricks in one of Cher’s “story-song trio” hits of questionable content today.
CLIFF RICHARD
Devil Woman
The crazy thing is … if you’ve only heard Cliff Richard from this track and his 1980’s pop hits ,you have absolutely no idea how much of a game-changer this song was for his career. His entire catalog prior to this worldwide smash was full of treacly-sweet ballads with about as much soul as a beige wallpaper factory. I wonder who could have predicted that …
STYX
Crystal Ball
Would someone explain to me, explaining it like I’m five years old, why Styx isn’t in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame YET?? You’ve got deep tracks like this that are incredible … and these were the songs that AREN’T released as incredible Top 40 anthems. I guess no one could have predicted that. 😀
SPARKS
| Predict
And the greatest ending to a pop song. “And this song will fade out … I predict.” Sure, it will.
That’s just a few … but if you have more that fall into this theme or category, feel free to add them to the comments section below.
